About Alpacas!

Unlike wild animals, alpacas have no natural defenses and rely on humans for care and protection. They have been domesticated and tended for centuries. Annual fleece shearing is essential for their health and wellbeing.

Originating in the Andean mountains of South America, alpacas have found new homes worldwide over the last 40 years. Currently, there are millions of alpacas across the globe, with 94% residing in South America. In the USA, there are approximately 200,000 alpacas, while Australia has around 350,000 and the UK has about 45,000.

The fleece of alpacas evolved to provide warmth in the extreme temperature variations of the high and arid Altiplano, where temperatures can swing from sub-zero to the 70s within a single day. This unique evolution contributes to the luxurious and satisfying experience of alpaca wool.
